Ever since high school, I have been involved and passionate for the arts. I began studying photography as a freshman in high school and continued to pursue photography through my time at University of Michigan, both in classes and extra-curricular activities. Meanwhile, I worked on the university’s newspaper, The Michigan Daily as a staff photographer, where I was assigned to shoot key political visitors such as John McCain, and Big Ten sporting events.
Since discovering graphic design, I have embraced the field with passion. I left my home and my job in North Carolina after my husband deployed to Afghanistan, and moved to California to build a foundation for my career. As soon as I arrived in Los Angeles, I began taking design courses at Santa Monica City College. Simultaneously I found a full-time job working for Adiamor.com, an online multimillion-dollar jewelry company. I was in charge of design tasks, web design projects, and marketing projects as well; implementing excellent customer service was a large portion of the job as well. Since Adiamor, I have focused my time on freelance work through my website, debbiesorkinstudio.com, and have established a substantial client base. I also work remotely for HIT Web Design, a company based in Utah designing and implementing websites, Flash banners, along with logo design.
In other words, I do toss and turn at night thinking about a color scheme, or ways to manipulate a client’s logo into a particular piece. Although my work experiences have not always been linear, they have been valuable work experiences, and have made me a more well-rounded individual. These experiences, coupled with my everyday life, continue to influence and motivate me to make this world a more aesthetically beautiful place. In doing so, I strive to create thought provoking statements through simple techniques.
